AN EXHIBITION ON PAPER

BEYOND CONTROL was an art press publication rooted in the analog sophistication of the newspaper era. Conceived as a quarterly exhibition on paper, the project combined artist stories, educational features, and interactive elements, offering a tactile and immersive way to engage with contemporary culture.

Distributed worldwide, BEYOND CONTROL was available exclusively in person at CONTROL Gallery and the BEYOND THE STREETS Flagship in Los Angeles, reinforcing the project’s emphasis on physical presence and community over passive consumption.

A defining moment of the publication was the inclusion of Cheech Marin, a cultural icon whose influence extends far beyond his work in film. As one of the foremost collectors and advocates of Chicano art, Marin has spent decades championing artists and preserving their histories. His commitment culminated in the opening of The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture in Riverside, California — a landmark institution dedicated to elevating Chicano artists within the broader art historical canon.

Featuring Marin’s story within BEYOND CONTROL aligned directly with the project’s mission: to foreground voices and narratives from communities of color, and to situate cultural storytelling within a broader social and historical context.
